April 22, 2022 

  • Organizations with an Enterprise License to LabArchives ELN can now integrate with their institution’s OneDrive subscription for storing large files (over 250MB). All large files are tracked and monitored to ensure the integrity of the large files stored through the OneDrive integration.

  • LabArchives ELN Free Edition features expanded!  Free Edition users of the ELN can now take advantage of 1GB of storage across multiple notebooks with the flexibility to add collaborators and fully test out the ELN features before upgrading to a paid subscription.  The Free Edition account limits file attachments to 25MB per file while the Professional Edition of ELN provides 100GB per user seat and attachments of up to 250MB per file. 
  • Security updates based on quarterly testing.

  • Attachment upload and Attachment entries updated to for new display, quick upload and improved messaging on upload confirmation.  Both the upload and attachment displays are now responsive and natively accessible to adapt to any device and support screen readers and keyboard navigation.

  • LabArchives Inventory and ELN integrated via the new Inventory List entry to record reagents and other items used in an experiment to improve precision of inventory usage and tracking.  Users save time by updating their information in the ELN and Inventory in a single step.  Whenever an item is used via the integration, the quantity is automatically debited in Inventory and a link is added connecting the entry in ELN to the item in Inventory.

  • LabArchives accounts require complex passwords for added security.  Users will be required to update their passwords every 6 months, receiving in-app reminders and email to enable password updating when it is convenient. 
  • Account creation workflow streamlined with new display and fewer steps to make it easier to get started using LabArchives services.

  • Notebook owners can add a description to the notebook Dashboard to add searchable meta data that can complement the notebook name. The description can be viewed by members of the notebook, but the description can only be edited by the Owner.

  • Released updated Assignment entry with an updated look that is responsive across all devices and is natively accessible. Instructors have a new option to designate an assignment as a group assignment, but all other features have been preserved. Students will find that in addition to the more modern, cleaner look, we added a few confirmation pop-ups to streamline and clarify the workflow.
  • New Android Mobile App for the ELN is now available. We released new Android Mobile apps based on regions where users have their LabArchives ELN accounts: LabArchives ELN for US and the Rest of the World, LabArchives ELN for UK, and LabArchives ELN for Australia. All three apps can be downloaded for free from the Google Play store. User can now use LabArchives ELN via the Android App or from the browser on their Android device. Users can take advantage of all the features unique to mobile devices such as dictating text entries with voice-to-text, adding photos and videos to the notebook and sharing files from other apps to the ELN app.
  • Addressed issues with the recently-updated Signing and Witnessing feature that impacted the display of the sign icon in the notebook tree and notices in the signing workflow for SSO users.

  • The new Rich Text editor is now available for all users. Existing entries can be edited using the old editor. The new Rich Text editor includes image annotation tools and expands the size of embedded images up to 10MB. It includes improved, mobile-friendly controls for tables, text, equations, and more.
  • Page Signing and Witnessing was updated with a new look and an adaptive design for optimal display and use across all devices.

            • All new look for the login and account creation pages.  Along with the sleeker design is a new security feature that will limit users to 5 unsuccessful login attempts before they are prompted to reset their passwords.  
            • Web session time-out control for institutions with enterprise subscriptions to LabArchives.  This allows the site administrators to set the amount of time a session is inactive (user is not taking any action in LabArchives) before the session times out.  Users will see a warning about 2 minutes before the session times out.  All changes are saved before the session ends.
            • New CUI Coversheet widget provides users their choice of three options to notify users that Controlled Unclassified Information is on a page or in a portion of the notebook.


            • Fully updated Chemical Sketcher widgets now include text annotations, the ability to copy and paste structures, along with many new drawing tools such as rings, chains, templates, atom label tool, and more.
            • Updated PDF generation tool provides the option to include comments in a pdf along with the option to leave out empty folders.  Improved formatting avoids breaking entries across pages and enhances page name presentation.

            • The new Collaboration feature allows users to work on the same page and see when someone else is editing an entry and will be locked out during the edit.  If a collaborator has an entry in edit mode and takes no action after 10 minutes, all changes will be saved and the entry will be unlocked and available for editing.  Updates will be seen right away and this ensures that users are always editing the latest version of rich text entries, plain text entries, headings, widgets, sketches, or PubMed references.  This feature does not extend to Online Office Document editing, which supports simultaneous editing or to image annotating.  Learn more.

            • The Share dialog box has been given an updated look and new functionality to auto-suggest email addresses drawing from those who already are part of the notebook owner’s account.  This means if someone owns 3 notebooks and has added 3 different people to each one, when using Share, the autosuggest would pull from those 9 existing members of the account. The notebook owner or administrator can also add someone who is not in the account already.
            • MS Office Plugin for Windows updated to improve functioning and messaging. We recommend users download and install the latest version for the best experience.
